Julie Donovan is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in the University Writing Program and the Women’s Leadership Program at George Washington University’s Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. She is also affiliated with the Global Women’s Institute. Her research focuses on 19th-century women’s writing, particularly examining Irish authors under colonial rule. Donovan previously practiced law in the UK for over a decade before transitioning to academia.
Her scholarly work includes her 2009 book Sydney Owenson (Lady Morgan) and the Politics of Style, followed by numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters analyzing authors like Charlotte Brontë, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Maria Edgeworth. Her research often intersects gender studies, colonialism, and literary analysis.
Donovan’s recent publications explore themes such as colonial resistance in Victorian fiction, gendered authorship in Irish literature, and the interplay between religious and material culture in classic texts. She has contributed to projects like The Palgrave Guide to Victorian Women’s Writing and The Theological Dickens.
Her teaching integrates legal advocacy skills into academic writing instruction, emphasizing clear argumentation and critical thinking. She is currently on sabbatical but remains active in scholarly networks and pedagogical innovation.
