Julie Bernini is a Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Lille, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities, History Department, and working within the UMR 8164 - HALMA (History, Archaeology, and Literature of the Ancient Worlds) research unit. She is a specialist in Greek history, particularly focusing on the Hellenistic and early Imperial periods. Dr. Bernini holds a doctorate from Bordeaux Montaigne University (2019) and has published extensively on Greek political institutions, urban history, and religious practices.
Her research interests span Greek History, History of Institutions, Urban History, History of Religions, and Greek Epigraphy. Dr. Bernini employs a spatial approach to understanding ancient Greek civic culture, analyzing how physical spaces shaped political practices and democratic decision-making in Greek city-states. She has conducted significant research on Ionian and Carian cities during the Hellenistic period, with particular attention to the spatial organization of political life.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on the intersection of physical space and political practice in ancient Greece, with particular emphasis on democratic institutions, assembly spaces, and the organization of civic life. She frequently employs epigraphic evidence combined with archaeological data to reconstruct ancient political landscapes. Her work shows increasing attention to comparative approaches across different Greek regions, particularly examining how democratic practices varied across the Hellenistic world.
Dr. Bernini has received a Humboldt Foundation fellowship to conduct research in Munich on deliberation spaces in Peloponnesian cities during the Hellenistic period. She is also actively involved in the DemoCIS project (Democracies, Citizenship and Institutions facing the transformations of public Spheres) at the University of Lille, which examines contemporary challenges facing Western democracies through the lens of ancient practices.
She has supervised educational projects including the GymnAsia initiative, where students created a podcast series titled 'Naked and Trained. Chronicles of the Gymnasium in the Greek World,' exploring athletic culture, politics, and intellectual education in ancient gymnasiums. Dr. Bernini also participates in organizing exhibitions and conferences related to ancient Greek culture, demonstrating her commitment to public engagement and educational outreach.
