- Ph.D. in Political Science, University of Texas at Austin
Research Interests:
Professor George studies how states undergoing major transformation manage ethnic minorities and separatist pressures. She has conducted extensive field research in Russia and Georgia, supported by the Fulbright Association, and her work links centre–periphery relations to broader processes of regime change and conflict.
Her publications analyse why regional elites in Russia and Georgia adopt violent or non-violent strategies to advance political and economic goals, contributing to debates on federalism, nationalism and post-imperial state formation.
Selected Publications:
George is the author of The Politics of Ethnic Separatism in Russia and Georgia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009) and has published articles in Europe-Asia Studies, Post-Soviet Affairs, European Security and Central Asian Survey, along with chapters in several edited volumes on Caucasus and Central Asian politics.
Media & Public Engagement:
She is a frequent media commentator on Russian and post-Soviet affairs, providing expert analysis on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its regional implications.
