Dr. Anna Matveeva is a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the King’s Russia Institute, part of the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy and School of Politics & Economics at King’s College London. She specializes in conflict studies, peacebuilding, and Russian foreign policy, with a focus on post-Soviet states and their geopolitical implications. Her work bridges academia and practice, including roles with the UN and international NGOs.
Her research interests include Russian policies toward conflict-affected regions, conflicts in Ukraine, Central Asia, and the Caucasus, and the societal impacts of violent extremism. She has published extensively on these themes, analyzing topics such as the Donbas conflict’s regional effects and the geopolitical consequences of the USSR’s dissolution.
Recent publications highlight her analysis of the Ukraine war’s societal impact on Russia, the evolving dynamics of Russian political factions, and EU-Central Asia relations. Her work often critiques the limitations of liberal peace frameworks in conflict zones and emphasizes the need for non-violent approaches to security.
Dr. Matveeva’s consulting roles include advising international organizations like the UN, EU, and bilateral donors. She has led programs at International Alert and Saferworld and currently serves on the board of Nonviolent Peaceforce. Her current research explores the war in Ukraine’s effect on Russian political evolution and the long-term consequences of post-Soviet state fragmentation.
