Julie A Swartzendruber serves as Associate Professor of Microbiology & Immunology across five colleges at Midwestern University: College of Dental Medicine-Illinois, College of Health Sciences-Downers Grove, College of Graduate Studies - Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine, and Chicago College of Optometry. Her research focuses on two interconnected projects examining the immunomodulatory effects of Bacillus subtilis on allergic inflammation and the role of histamine receptors in immune cell function.
Dr. Swartzendruber's research interests center on the hygiene hypothesis and microbial influences on allergic disease. Her laboratory investigates how Bacillus subtilis prevents house dust mite-induced inflammation through immune suppression mechanisms, while simultaneously studying histamine receptor expression (particularly H2 receptor) in allergic asthma pathogenesis. This dual approach aims to develop preventive therapies rather than symptomatic treatments for rising allergic disease prevalence.
Analysis of her eight publications (2011-2022) reveals consistent focus on immunological mechanisms of allergic inflammation, with recent work emphasizing microbial immunomodulation and neutrophil recruitment pathways. Her research bridges microbiology, immunology, and pulmonary medicine, demonstrating translational potential for novel therapeutic targets in allergic conditions.
