معرفی
Benjamin Marsland is a Professor in the Department of Immunology and Pathology at Monash University, within the School of Translational Medicine. He leads the Respiratory Immunology laboratory and is actively engaged in research on host-microbe interactions, particularly in the context of respiratory diseases. He is affiliated with Alfred Hospital and maintains a strong collaborative network across immunology, microbiology, and translational medicine.
Benjamin Marsland earned his PhD in Immunology from the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research and the University of Otago in New Zealand. He then spent 14 years in Switzerland, working at ETH Zürich and the University of Lausanne, before joining Monash University.
His research focuses on the gut-lung axis, the microbiome, and how microbial interactions influence respiratory conditions such as asthma, allergy, and lung transplantation. His work explores how early-life microbiome disruptions affect long-term immune responses and disease susceptibility. He investigates microbial metabolites, including indole-3-propionic acid, and their role in modulating allergic inflammation. His lab also studies host responses in lung transplantation and the impact of dietary and microbial interventions on respiratory health.
His recent publications span high-impact journals such as Immunity, Cell, and PLoS Pathogens, with a strong emphasis on mechanistic insights into host-microbe crosstalk. Themes include microbiome dysbiosis, metabolic regulation of immunity, neuro-immune interactions, and interdisciplinary models like the GIN Discovery Program. His work integrates immunology, microbiology, metabolism, and translational medicine to address chronic respiratory diseases.
Benjamin Marsland is a Chief Investigator on multiple active research projects, including studies on modified microbial metabolites against allergic airway inflammation and tyrosine metabolism in respiratory diseases. He supervises PhD students and collaborates extensively with researchers in Australia and internationally. His laboratory is well-funded and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being.
He is part of the Marsland Lab, which focuses on respiratory immunology and the role of the microbiome in disease. The lab collaborates with clinicians and scientists across Monash University and Alfred Hospital, forming part of a broader network in mucosal immunology and translational research.
