Dr. Julianne Flanagan is a tenured Professor in the Addiction Sciences Division at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She specializes in addressing complex mental health challenges among veterans and couples, focusing on interpersonal violence, PTSD, substance use disorders, and alcohol-related aggression. Her work integrates clinical psychology with public health interventions, emphasizing telehealth and family-involved therapies.
Education: B.A. in Psychology (University of Vermont, 2003), M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (University of Tennessee, 2011). Clinical training includes a psychology internship at the Seattle VA and a NIDA-funded postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine.
Research Interests: Dr. Flanagan’s research bridges alcohol misuse, PTSD, and violence, particularly in veteran populations. She develops and evaluates interventions to reduce aggression and improve family-based AUD treatments through telehealth. Her methodologies include ecological momentary assessment and randomized controlled trials.
Current Projects: Leading three studies: 1) B-FIT telehealth treatment for AUD in veterans (2022), 2) Examining alcohol misuse and PTSD’s role in IPV (2023), 3) Adapting MERA-A intervention for alcohol-facilitated aggression (2024). All studies emphasize veterans' mental health and behavioral health outcomes. Recruitment contacts are managed through MUSC’s clinical trials division.
