Dr. Julian Kitchen is a Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at Brock University's Faculty of Education. He specializes in teacher education policy, self-study methodologies, and social justice issues, particularly LGBTQ+ and Indigenous education. Dr. Kitchen holds a BEd and PhD from the University of Toronto. His research focuses on enhancing teacher education through reflective practices and equity-focused curricula.
Research interests include revising teacher education policies, exploring relational approaches to social justice, and addressing legal aspects of teaching in Ontario. He has edited influential journals like Studying Teacher Education and authored Professionalism, Law and the Ontario Educator, now in its 3rd edition.
Recent work examines racialized teacher candidates' experiences, equity in admissions processes, and the role of practicum in teacher training. He has secured grants totaling over $137,000 for initiatives like the TEd ViV project (video-based pedagogy) and the Biwaase'aa/Maamaawisiiwin project supporting Indigenous education.
Dr. Kitchen actively contributes to professional organizations including the Self-Study of Teacher Education Practices SIG (AERA) and the Canadian Association for Teacher Education. His teaching includes courses on professionalism in education and societal influences on schooling.
