Dr. Julian Katz is a Researcher and Postdoc at the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 138 'Dynamics of Security' at Philipps-Universität Marburg, focusing on Subproject A03 'Dynastic Marriage Contracts'. Since 2020, he has contributed to historical security research, particularly analyzing intervention policies and justifications of war in the early modern period. He holds a PhD from Philipps-Universität Marburg (2019), where his dissertation examined the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604) through the lens of security, law, and religion.
His research interests span early modern British and Spanish history, historical security studies, digital humanities, and the intersection of intervention policy with religious and legal frameworks. He co-edited Recht zur Intervention – Pflicht zur Intervention? (2019) and manages the database Dynastische Eheverträge der Frühen Neuzeit. Previously, he worked as a research associate in early modern studies (2015–2017) and held fellowships from the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Adolf Schmidtmann Foundation.
Katz’s publications include analyses of early modern war justification, colonial security dynamics, and the role of reputation in statecraft. His teaching includes seminars on Elizabethan England and international history. He has presented widely on topics such as humanitarian intervention theories and confessionalization processes in early modern Spain.
