Julian D Richards is a Professor of Archaeology at the University of York, renowned for his work in Viking archaeology and digital heritage. He founded the Archaeology Data Service (1996) and co-founded Internet Archaeology. Since 2024, he has served as Director of the Heritage Science Data Service, and was awarded an OBE in 2024 for his contributions to heritage and digital archiving.
Research Interests: Richards specializes in Viking Age England, focusing on the Viking Great Army through fieldwork at Torksey and publications like The Viking Great Army and the Making of England (2021). His digital archaeology work includes Data Processing in Archaeology (1985), the first textbook on the subject, and advancing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles in archaeology. He also investigates Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian settlements via projects such as Cottam and Wharram Percy.
