Dr Steve Ashby is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of York, specializing in Viking-Age studies through material culture analysis. He co-founded the interdisciplinary Viking Studies Research Group and chairs the WRoCAH Heritage and Material Culture cluster. His work combines scientific techniques with anthropological theory to study identity, trade, and technology in medieval Europe.

Research focuses on:
- Portable material culture (especially bone/antler combs)
- Human-animal relationships

His research projects include Melting Pot: Food and Identity in the Viking Age (AHRC-funded) and CNVT: Crafting Networks in Viking Towns (British Academy). He has received multiple awards including the Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award (2013) and Mick Aston Prize for Archaeological Photography (2017).
