Julia von Blume is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology at Yale School of Medicine. Her research focuses on secretory protein sorting mechanisms at the trans-Golgi network (TGN), with applications to diabetes and immune cell biology. She completed her PhD at the University of Ulm, Germany, and conducted postdoctoral work at UC San Diego and the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), Spain. Her lab uses cell biology, biochemistry, and advanced microscopy to study Ca²⁺-dependent sorting, insulin granule biogenesis, and phase separation in secretory pathways.
Key research areas include: 1) Molecular mechanisms of secretory cargo sorting, 2) Role of Cab45 and chromogranin B in granule formation, 3) Links between TGN sorting and diabetes/immune cell function. Recent work explores how chromogranin B forms condensates to package insulin and enzymes, and how TGN defects impact lysosomal positioning and inflammation.
