Belinda Yau is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sydney's School of Medical Sciences (Faculty of Medicine and Health). Her research focuses on insulin secretory pathways, metabolic disease mechanisms, and protein trafficking in pancreatic β-cells. She completed her B. MedSci (2011) and PhD in Medicine (2015) at the University of Sydney under Prof. Nicholas Hunt, studying immune responses in pneumococcal meningitis. Currently, she works in Dr. Melkam Kebede's Islet Biology and Metabolism laboratory, investigating insulin granule aging and function. Key research themes include diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.
Education:
- B. MedSci, University of Sydney (2011)
- PhD in Medicine, University of Sydney (2015)
Research Interests:
- Insulin secretory granule biogenesis and function
- Metabolic disease pathogenesis (diabetes, obesity)
- Proteomic analysis of β-cell dysfunction
- Genetic influences on metabolic pathways
Her recent studies explore how insulin granules age and how their dysfunction contributes to metabolic disorders. Collaborative projects involve proteomic screening for diabetes autoantigens and investigating Cab45 trafficking in type 2 diabetes.
Grants & Funding:
- Charles Perkins Centre/Type 1 Diabetes Seed Funding Grant (2024)
- FMH Bright Ideas Grant (2023)
Labs/Teams: Member of the Kebede Lab and the Charles Perkins Centre.
