Professor David James holds the Leonard P. Ullmann Chair of Metabolic Systems Biology at the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney. He is a Professor in both the School of Life and Environmental Sciences and the School of Medicine. His research focuses on metabolic diseases, particularly Type 2 diabetes, leveraging systems biology approaches to dissect metabolic homeostasis. He leads the James Lab and collaborates with the Metabolic Cybernetics team.
Key research interests include understanding how genetics and environment influence metabolic disorders, with a focus on insulin resistance, adipocyte biology, and omics technologies. His lab employs proteomics, metabolomics, and computational biology to unravel disease mechanisms.
Professor James has secured grants totaling over $15 million, including the NHMRC Ideas Grant for studies on mitochondrial defects and cardiometabolic disease. He leads multidisciplinary teams at the Charles Perkins Centre, fostering collaborations in imaging, computational biology, and molecular genetics.
Awards include the ARC Laureate Fellowship. His lab trains PhD candidates in metabolic research, with current advisees including Alexis Diaz, Harry Cutler, and Yiju Zhang. Research outputs span metabolic pathways, genetic diversity, and drug development for metabolic diseases.
