Dr. Julia Preobraschenski serves as a Researcher leading the Preobraschenski Group at the Institute for Auditory Neuroscience (IAN), University of Göttingen. Her laboratory investigates fundamental mechanisms of membrane dynamics with emphasis on ferlin proteins critical for auditory and muscular function.
Her primary research focuses on otoferlin in auditory synapses and dysferlin in muscle membrane repair. Utilizing a bottom-up reconstitution approach with purified proteins in artificial membranes, her group employs biochemical assays, biophysical measurements, and structural techniques including cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography. Key objectives include elucidating calcium-dependent membrane fusion mechanisms, vesicle priming dynamics, and phospholipid interactions in neurotransmission and cellular repair processes.
Analysis of her 2019-2022 publications reveals consistent contributions to membrane biophysics and synaptic function, with recurring themes in V-ATPase regulation, neurotransmitter transporter dynamics, and vesicle subpopulation heterogeneity. Her work frequently employs single-molecule methodologies and advanced imaging to dissect molecular mechanisms underlying hearing disorders and muscular pathologies.
Dr. Preobraschenski's laboratory includes current members such as Dr. Abhishek Acharya, with former contributors including Huong Giang Doan, Irene Gomez Garrote, Mayan-Olivia Langer, and Mehar Monga. The group operates within IAN's collaborative framework alongside specialized teams including the Cretu, Goßler, and Moser groups, all focused on auditory neuroscience and translational hearing research.
