Dr. Julia Emberley is a Professor in the Department of English and Writing Studies at The University of Western Ontario and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC). Her research focuses on Indigenous storytelling practices, testimonial discourses, and decolonial theory. She holds a SSHRC Insight Grant (2015-19) on Indigenous Literatures and Decolonization. She is also an adjunct professor in the Center for Transitional Justice and Post-Conflict Reconstruction, the Department of Women’s Studies and Gender Research, and the Comparative Literature Department.
Dr. Emberley earned her PhD from York University (1990), MA from Queen’s University (1985), and BA from The University of Western Ontario (1982). Her work spans intersections of postcolonial theory, feminist critique, and cultural studies, with notable publications including *The Testimonial Uncanny: Indigenous Storytelling, Knowledge and Reparative Practices* (SUNY, 2014).
Her research interests emphasize decolonizing methodologies, Indigenous epistemologies, and the cultural politics of representation. Recent projects explore testimonial practices in global contexts, including Arab-American diasporic literatures and African American engagements with Islamic texts.
Dr. Emberley’s scholarly contributions address urgent themes such as truth and reconciliation in Indigenous communities, the politics of childhood narratives, and the ethical dimensions of storytelling. She has supervised PhD students on topics ranging from international Indigenous literatures to post-9/11 Pakistani literature.
