Julia Brook is the Director of the DAN School of Drama and Music and an Associate Professor at Queen's University. She holds degrees from Brandon University (B.Mus., B.Ed., M.Mus.), the University of Ottawa (M.A.), and Queen's University (Ph.D.). Her research focuses on community contexts in arts education, using qualitative methods to study studio, school, and community music programs. She leads the SSHRC-sponsored Rise, Shine, Sing! project, which explores music theatre programs for diverse participants. Her work emphasizes accessibility, inclusive pedagogies, and the intersection of music education with career trajectories and digital tools.
Dr. Brook has taught courses like MUSC 114 Introduction to Teaching Music to Children and MUTH 387 Research Methods in Performing Arts Education. She has received funding from SSHRC, CFI, and OFI for projects addressing place-based education, music theatre innovation, and digital resource development. Her current initiatives include expanding inclusive music theatre practices and investigating virtual musicking for older adults.
