Julia Alvarez is a renowned writer and Professor at Middlebury College, where she has been a full-time faculty member since 1988. She currently serves as Writer in Residence, offering creative writing workshops in poetry and prose. Her roles include advising the Alianza Latino organization and mentoring students through creative writing theses. She holds a Master’s in Creative Writing from Syracuse University.
Alvarez’s research and creative work focus on themes of identity, cultural heritage, and storytelling, particularly within Latinx and Dominican contexts. Her acclaimed novels, including In the Time of the Butterflies and How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, explore diasporic experiences and family narratives. She has also authored poetry, children’s books, and nonfiction, earning recognition for her contributions to American and Hispanic literature.
