Judith Townend is a Reader in Digital Society and Justice at the University of Sussex's School of Law, Politics and Sociology. She co-directs the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab and chairs the Sussex University of Sanctuary group, with visiting fellowships at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and Connected by Data.
Her research examines public access to information, protection of public interest journalism, and freedom of expression through socio-legal methods. Key areas include charitable journalism funding, open justice systems, and safeguarding journalistic sources. Her recent book Observing Justice (2023) explores digital transparency in courts.
