Jud Mathews is Professor of Law and Political Science and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Penn State Law. He holds an AB from Princeton University, JD from Yale Law School, and MA/PhD from Yale University. Mathews clerked for Judge Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
His scholarship examines constitutional rights adjudication techniques (especially proportionality review) and administrative law topics including judicial deference doctrines and democratic theory tensions. Authored books include 'Extending Rights' Reach' and 'Proportionality Balancing and Constitutional Governance' (with Alec Stone Sweet).
