Dr. Joyce Obeid is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University, affiliated with the Child Health & Exercise Medicine Program. She joined the department in 2017 and specializes in pediatric exercise physiology, focusing on children and adolescents with chronic medical conditions or disabilities.
Dr. Obeid earned her PhD in Kinesiology with a focus on Pediatric Exercise Physiology from McMaster University between 2010 and 2015.
Her research program explores the power of play for children with chronic conditions through three interconnected themes: measurement of movement, relationships between physical activity and health, and technology to promote physical activity throughout pediatric years. Her work spans Children's Health, Exercise Physiology, Health Technology, and Physical Activity Measurement, with particular emphasis on children with disabilities, chronic diseases, and developmental challenges. She has published extensively in journals such as Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, Pediatric Exercise Science, and Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.
Analysis of Dr. Obeid's recent publications reveals a strong focus on objective measurement of physical activity using accelerometry, particularly in special pediatric populations including those with cerebral palsy, concussion, inflammatory bowel disease, and developmental coordination disorder. Her research increasingly incorporates machine learning techniques for activity analysis and examines bidirectional relationships between physical activity, sleep, and health outcomes in children with chronic conditions.
Dr. Obeid has taught several courses at McMaster University including Paediatric Exercise Physiology (KINESIOL 4Q03), Selected Topics in Kinesiology II (KINESIOL 4VV3), Independent Study in Medical Sciences (MEDSCI 799), and Pediatric Exercise Medicine (MEDSCI 747).
Her scholarly work has gained significant attention across numerous platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Mendeley, clinical guidelines, and news outlets, with multiple publications referenced in clinical guideline sources and picked up by major news outlets.
