Dr. Kirsten Bell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University. She holds a PhD in Kinesiology from McMaster (2017) and completed a CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Waterloo (2017-2021). Her academic foundation includes an MSc in Kinesiology (Waterloo, 2013) and BSc in Biology (McMaster, 2010). She teaches courses including Human Nutrition and Health (KINESIOL 1F03) and mentors graduate students through Directed Reading courses.
Her research program integrates biochemical techniques and imaging tools to investigate:
- Muscle health and body composition in aging and chronic diseases (cancer, diabetes)
- Clinical applications of ultrasonography for muscle assessment
- Fat metabolism and metabolic health relationships
- Exercise-nutrition interventions for improving physical function
Analysis of her 47+ publications reveals consistent focus on:
- Muscle composition measurement methodologies (particularly ultrasonography)
- Metabolic dysregulation in aging and chronic disease
- Exercise interventions for cancer/diabetes populations
- Sarcopenia mechanisms and prevention
Awards & Recognition:
- CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship (2017-2021)
As an advisor, she supervises graduate students through Directed Reading courses (KINESIOL 723) and Individual Research Studies (KINESIOL 702), though specific student names aren't listed. No grant information is currently available in institutional records.
She collaborates extensively within McMaster's kinesiology research network, including co-authorship with Marina Mourtzakis, Gianni Parise, and Stuart Phillips. Her laboratory focuses on muscle physiology and metabolic health assessment techniques.
