Joy Allen, Ph.D., MT-BC serves as Chair of the Music Therapy department at Berklee College of Music where she also acts as founding director of the Music and Health Institute. With over 17 years of professional experience in music therapy, she holds leadership positions including executive board chair for the New England region of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), where she also serves on the Research Committee, Assembly of Delegates, and Judicial Review Board.
Her research interests focus on psychological health, pain management, trauma-informed education, and medical applications of music therapy, particularly in oncology and HIV/AIDS treatment settings. Dr. Allen has presented her work at numerous peer-reviewed conferences internationally and has contributed significantly to the literature in her field.
Analysis of her publications reveals a consistent emphasis on the biopsychosocial approach to music therapy in medical settings, with particular attention to how music can address both physical symptoms like pain alongside emotional and spiritual needs. Her work demonstrates expertise across multiple medical contexts including cancer care, pain management, critical care, cardiac care, and neurological conditions.

Her work with the Music and Health Institute focuses on designing and implementing music-centered programs that impact overall quality of life through identifying health-related outcomes and ensuring program sustainability.
She has developed multiple music therapy clinical programs in healthcare settings around the East Coast and previously served as clinical training director and coordinator of music therapy at Trident Health Systems in South Carolina.
