Carol Shultis is an Associate Professor of Music Therapy at the Petrie School of Music, Converse University, with over 30 years of clinical experience in medical settings including acute hospital care, rehabilitative care, mental health care, long-term care, and hospice. She previously supervised 100+ practicum students at Forbes Health System and served as adjunct faculty at Seton Hill University.
- Education: PhD in Music Therapy from Temple University, MEd from Penn State University, and BS in Music Education from Lebanon Valley College.
Her research focuses on medical music therapy applications in intensive care units, psychiatric care, cardiac rehabilitation, and oncology. She explores stress reduction techniques, guided imagery and music, and supervision models in clinical training. Her work bridges music therapy education with practical implementation in geriatric and palliative care settings.
Carol has authored/co-authored five key publications, including studies on cardiac and cancer patients conducted during her doctoral work at Temple University and a widely used textbook for student music therapists. These works span cardiovascular medicine, oncology, and mental health interventions.
- Awards: 2012 Service Award from Mid-Atlantic Region/AMTA; 2017 AMTA Student Award.
She has extensive experience mentoring music therapy students, training 88 interns, and developing clinical supervision programs. Her current research aims to expand ICU music therapy protocols and refine supervision frameworks in medical settings.
