Dr. Joshua Stoll is an Associate Professor of Marine Policy at the University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences. His research focuses on ocean governance, coastal community resilience, and fisheries policy, with emphasis on social-ecological dynamics and sustainable seafood systems. He leads the Social Oceans Lab and co-founded the Local Catch Network, an initiative strengthening local seafood systems.
Stoll holds a Ph.D. in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from the University of Maine. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, including direct participation in fisheries and collaborations with stakeholders. Recent research explores resilience in Maine’s lobster fishery, seafood distribution networks, and aquaculture governance.
- Key Projects: Bait crisis adaptation in lobster fisheries, seafood self-reliance assessments, small-scale fisheries policy gaps, and climate change impacts on coastal communities.
- Grants: NSF National Research Traineeship program for interdisciplinary ocean science.
- Awards: Not explicitly listed, but recognized for contributions to marine policy and community engagement.
Publications emphasize socio-economic dimensions of fisheries management, with over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Students in his lab investigate topics like seafood value chains, aquaculture sustainability, and community-based fisheries governance. The lab’s work bridges academia and practice, informing policies that balance ecological and human needs.
