Dr. Joshua Schwab-Cartas is an Assistant Professor at NSCAD University's Division of Art History and Contemporary Culture (Art Education). His work focuses on decolonial aesthetics, participatory research, and Indigenous knowledge systems. He specializes in cellphilm, a participatory visual method using mobile technology for cultural preservation. He co-edited the seminal What’s a Cellphilm? (2016) and leads SSHRC-funded projects like Living Our Languages and Transform.
Research initiatives include Indigenous language revitalization through arts-based practices, food sovereignty collaborations, and addressing gender-based violence via community-led arts initiatives. His approach integrates Zapotec epistemology with contemporary pedagogy, emphasizing relationality and intergenerational healing.
Recent publications explore ethical facilitation in visual research and Zapotec traditions in education. He collaborates with Indigenous communities across Turtle Island to co-create culturally sustaining programs, fostering spaces for Indigenous students to engage with ancestral practices through art and land-based activities.
Key collaborations include the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre and projects linking Mi’kmaq and Zapotec youth through food production and storytelling. His work bridges academic research with grassroots activism, prioritizing community sovereignty and cultural resurgence.
