Dr. Leah Decter is an Associate Professor in the Division of Media Arts at NSCAD University. Her work bridges inter-media/performance art and scholarship, focusing on decolonial paradigms and settler colonialism. She holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from Queen's University and an MFA in New Media from Transart Institute. Previously, she was a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at York University’s School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design, and a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of New South Wales’ National Institute for Experimental Arts.
Her research examines artistic production as a tool to subvert colonial ideologies and foster non-colonial frameworks. Key interests include social-spatial politics, ethics of relationality in Indigenous sovereignty contexts, and critical white settler perspectives. Her artwork and writing have been featured in venues such as Journal of Critical Race Inquiry, Liminalities, Canadian Theatre Review, and Fuse Magazine, alongside exhibitions at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Images Festival, and international institutions.
Upcoming projects include a co-edited Special Issue of PUBLIC Journal and book chapters addressing decolonial aesthetics. Her practice spans Canada, Australia, Europe, and beyond, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and community-engaged research.
