Shirley Anne Swelchalot (Stó:lō ascendant bearing ancestral names Shxwhá:yathel and Swelchalot) serves as a Lecturer in the Master of Educational Technology program at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Education, teaching ETEC 521. A doctoral candidate at UBC, she holds the prestigious SSHRC Doctoral Scholarship and operates from her ancestral territory in Shxwhá:y Village.
Her educational foundation stems from doctoral research guided by the late Dr. Michael Marker, focusing on transformative Indigenous academic paradigms. Research interests prioritize:
- Indigenizing institutions to advance Indigenous self-determination
- Reconciliation education for improved Indigenous-non-Indigenous relationships
- Decolonizing technological frameworks in cultural expression
- Educational policy rooted in ancestral knowledge systems
Her scholarship critically examines colonial influences on technology while reclaiming Indigenous technological sovereignty. Notable recognition includes the competitive SSHRC Doctoral Scholarship awarded for her work at the intersection of Indigenous resurgence and educational transformation.
As a doctoral candidate advised by Dr. Michael Marker, her academic journey bridges community-based practice with institutional change. Grounded in Stó:lō territory, her work embodies ancestral principles expressed through the closing phrase Ey Si:yam Hoych’ka Si:yam (Thank you, Grandfathers and Grandmothers).
