Joshua M. Mitchell is a Professor of Political Theory at Georgetown University, serving as Director of the Tocqueville Forum on the Roots of American Democracy. He holds dual academic appointments in the College’s Department of Government and the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. Previously, he served as Chairman of the Government Department and Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs at SFS-Q. During 2008–2010, he was Acting Chancellor of The American University of Iraq – Sulaimani.
Dr. Mitchell’s research focuses on the intersection of political thought and theology in Western traditions. He earned his Ph.D., M.A. (Political Science), and M.A. (Sociology) from the University of Chicago, along with a BGS from the University of Michigan. His work spans books on Tocqueville, early modern thought, and contemporary identity politics, with a forthcoming book titled THE GENTLE SEDUCTION OF TYRANNY.
His research interests emphasize the philosophical foundations of democracy, religion’s role in governance, and modern identity politics. His publications include influential books like THE FRAGILITY OF FREEDOM and AMERICAN AWAKENING, analyzing democratic challenges and cultural dynamics. Mitchell is also an engaged public intellectual, writing on contemporary American politics and advocating environmental stewardship through his farm and solar-electric sailboat projects.
