Joshua Frank Cerra is the Department Chair and Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He specializes in urban ecosystems, climate-adaptive design, and the intersection of communities with site development processes. His research focuses on designing climate-resilient urban environments and ecological stewardship through collaborative projects with institutions like the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Cornell Botanic Gardens.
Education:
- Master of Landscape Architecture, University of Minnesota, College of Design
- Bachelor of Arts in Biology, Vassar College
Research Interests: Dr. Cerra’s work bridges ecological science and design practice, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to urban challenges. He leads the Climate-adaptive Design program, exploring how landscapes can mitigate climate impacts through innovative studio-based projects and partnerships. Key areas include distributed water systems, community engagement in resilience planning, and integrating biodiversity goals into urban design.
Recognition: He has received multiple accolades for teaching and student mentorship, including the 2015 Excellence in Design Studio Teaching Award and the 2014 Young Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. His students and collaborations have earned national ASLA awards for projects like the ‘FLOOD//LAND’ poster and the ‘Weaving the Waterfront’ design.
Grants & Labs: Principal Investigator for the Atkinson Center Faculty Fellowship and co-PI on projects like the Cornell Climate Change Garden. He teaches courses such as LA 7010 (Climate-adaptive Design), LA 4070 (Urban Ecology), and LA 6940 (Building with Birds), emphasizing hands-on, research-integrated learning.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Climate-adaptive Design Studio and YardWorks Project with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, focusing on avian-friendly landscape designs and ecological connectivity in urban areas.
