He specializes in private international law, conflict of laws, and international arbitration, with a focus on legal theory and transnational dispute resolution mechanisms. Folkard holds a BA in Jurisprudence with Law Studies in Europe from the University of Oxford, followed by a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) from the same institution.
His teaching responsibilities include convening the LLM International Commercial Litigation and co-convening the LLB Conflict of Laws modules. Folkard is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has published extensively in his field, including contributions to landmark case analyses and arbitration law scholarship.
He maintains a parallel career as a barrister at Twenty Essex in London, where his practice focuses on international disputes relating to: (1) service out of jurisdiction; (2) foreign applicable law; (3) recognition/enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards; (4) institutional arbitrations; and (5) arbitration-related court applications.
In research, Folkard's work explores intersections between procedural law, arbitration frameworks, and transnational legal systems. His recent publications address critical issues like the enforceability of arbitral awards across jurisdictions and the application of historical case precedents to modern legal challenges.
