Joshua Eisenman is a professor of politics at the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame and a senior fellow for China studies at the American Foreign Policy Council. He has been a Kellogg Institute faculty fellow since 2019. Previously, he served as an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin (2014-2019) and has been a visiting professor at Peking University, Fudan University, and NYU-Shanghai.
Eisenman earned an MA in international relations from Johns Hopkins University's Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies and a PhD in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles. His research focuses on the political economy of China's development and its foreign relations with the United States and the developing world, particularly Africa.
His scholarly output includes four major books, with his 2018 work Red China's Green Revolution: Technological Innovation, Institutional Change, and Economic Development Under the Commune receiving an honorable mention for the 2019 Robert W. Hamilton Book Award. His book China and Africa: A Century of Engagement (2012), co-authored with David Shinn, was named one of the top three books about Africa by Foreign Affairs. His most recent book, China's Relations with Africa: A New Era of Strategic Engagement (2023), continues his focus on China-Africa relations.
Eisenman's research demonstrates a clear trajectory examining China's engagement with the developing world, particularly Africa, from historical, economic, and political perspectives. His work spans China's revolutionary period through contemporary foreign policy, with particular attention to the political economy of development and the strategic dimensions of China's global engagement.

Eisenman has received research grants including the 2023-2024 grant for How Democracies Resist China's Coercive Influence, The Case of Colombia. The Political Economy of Africa-China Relations in the Era of COVID-19 and the 2020 panel The US Presidential Election and Asia Policy. His expertise is regularly sought by major media outlets including The Washington Post, NPR, and The Wall Street Journal.
