Joshua Duchan is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair at Wayne State University's Department of Music, within the College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts. He is an ethnomusicologist specializing in American popular music, with a focus on collegiate a cappella and the works of Billy Joel.
Research Interests: His scholarship examines the intersection of music, culture, and technology. Current projects include analyzing the portrayal of 'newsies' in American popular songs (1830-1930) and studying how collegiate a cappella groups adapted to social distancing during the pandemic through asynchronous music creation. He also maintains a long-term research focus on Billy Joel's music, its cultural impact, and its role in American history.

Advising and Grants: Dr. Duchan has advised numerous graduate theses and projects on topics ranging from video game music to feminist praxis in composition. His research has been supported by grants from the American Musicological Society, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. He also served as Chair of the Society for American Music's Committee on the Conference.
