Joshua B. Kayser is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Cpl. Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center. He holds dual appointments in the departments of Clinical Medicine and Medical Ethics and Health Policy.
- Education: MD and MPH from Tulane University; MBE from the University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Kayser's research focuses on the intersection of medical ethics, communication, and end-of-life care in the ICU. He investigates how end-of-life decisions are made through the FIELDS program and develops conflict resolution strategies for clinical settings. His work emphasizes patient-centered care, surrogate decision-making, and ethical frameworks in critical care.
His publications from 2012-2017 address topics like advance care planning, bioethics mediation, and ICU conflict management. Nationally, he contributes to the Society of Critical Care Medicine's Patient and Family Support Committee and leads the VA's National ICU-Palliative Care Network. Locally, he serves on the University of Pennsylvania's Student Standards Committee and the VA's Hospital Ethics Committee.
