Josh Sakon is a Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Arkansas, College of Arts & Sciences. His research spans biochemistry, structural biology, and materials science with a particular focus on protein structure, collagen-binding domains, and nanomaterials.
Dr. Sakon received his B.S. from Southern Oregon University, followed by a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and completed his postdoctoral training in Biochemistry at Cornell University.
His research interests primarily focus on crystallography and enzymology, with significant contributions to understanding collagen-binding domains, cellulose nanocrystals, and protein engineering. His work bridges fundamental biochemical research with practical applications in biomaterials and therapeutic development.
Dr. Sakon's recent publications demonstrate an interdisciplinary research program that integrates structural biology with materials science and biomedical applications. His work shows increasing focus on nanomaterials, particularly cellulose-based systems, while maintaining expertise in protein structure and collagen interactions.
- National Academy of Inventors Fellow, 2020
Dr. Sakon has founded two biotechnology companies: BiologicsMD LLC (VC funded) and S3 Biologics LLC (launched in 2021), demonstrating his commitment to translating research into practical applications. His industry involvement has led to 15 patents, several of which have been licensed to companies. He is also active in international research organizations, including Advances in Mineral Metabolism.
Dr. Sakon maintains an active laboratory focused on protein structure, collagen-binding domains, and nanomaterials research, with ongoing projects spanning basic biochemical research and applied biomedical development.
