Dr. Josh Roose is an Associate Professor of Politics at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University. His primary research focuses on the intersection of politics, law, sociology, and religion, with a specialization in violent extremism, terrorism, and masculinity studies. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Melbourne, alongside degrees in Law and Arts from Monash and Macquarie Universities. His current roles include co-convenor of the Mobilities, Diversity and Multiculturalism research group and executive membership in the Centre for Resilient and Inclusive Societies (CRIS).
Dr. Roose has secured significant research funding, including Australian Research Council grants for projects such as Anti-Women Online Movements (2022–2025) and The Far Right: Intellectuals, Masculinity and Citizenship (2021–2024). He advises government agencies like the Department of Home Affairs and Victoria Police, and frequently engages with media outlets such as The New York Times, BBC, and ABC News. His expertise includes counter-terrorism strategies, the role of masculinities in extremism, and the socio-economic drivers of radicalization.
He supervises PhD candidates exploring topics ranging from Islamic democracies to Australia’s counter-terrorism policies. Dr. Roose is also affiliated with organizations such as the Australian Political Science Association and the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT). His recent publications include Masculinity and Violent Extremism (2022) and The New Demagogues (2020).
