Imogen Richards is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Deakin University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences, with affiliations to the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation. Her research examines political violence through critical criminological frameworks, focusing on far-right extremism, eco-fascism, and media representations of crime.
Research investigates: 1) Intersections of climate change and far-right ideologies; 2) Media framing of extremist violence; 3) Political-economic dimensions of terrorism; and 4) Policy responses to right-wing extremism in Australia. Current projects analyze how environmental crises are exploited by ethnonationalist movements, with fieldwork examining online discourse and protest activities.
Recent publications demonstrate theoretical focus on: eco-fascism (45%), media criminology (25%), counter-terrorism policy (20%), and neoliberal contexts of extremism (10%). Authored books include Global Heating and the Australian Far Right (Routledge, 2023) and Criminologists in the Media (Routledge, 2022).
Current PhD advisees: Stephanie Carter (far-right COVID protests), Germanos Koumouris (climate technology discourses), and Raimonn Timothy Lim (far-right militarization).
