Josh Owen

Josh Owen serves as the Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design and Director of the Vignelli Center for Design Studies at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he also teaches in the Department of Industrial Design within the College of Art and Design. Previously serving as Director of the Industrial Design Department, he continues to lead the renowned Metaproject course that connects students with industry partners for real-world design challenges.

His educational background includes a BA and BFA from Cornell University and an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Owen's professional practice bridges academia and industry through his eponymous design studio, with work featured in permanent collections of prestigious institutions worldwide including Centre Georges Pompidou, Chicago Athenaeum, Corning Museum of Glass, and Design Museum Brussels.

Owen's research and professional interests span Industrial Design, Product Design, Service Design, and Creative Entrepreneurship. His work explores the intersection of design methodology, manufacturing processes, and social impact, emphasizing his three-fold notion of success: social relevance (design's societal impact), critical recognition (peer validation through awards and exhibitions), and commercial viability (market acceptance and economic contribution). His Metaproject initiative has become a signature program connecting academic theory with industry practice.

His publications portfolio shows consistent output across multiple design domains, with recent works focusing on design center management, collaborative design processes, and student-industry partnerships.
