Dr. Josephine Yu is a Research Fellow in the Musculoskeletal Health Program at The George Institute for Global Health and holds a conjoint lecturer position with the School of Biomedical Sciences at UNSW. Her work focuses on improving patient outcomes for musculoskeletal conditions through innovative interventions in exercise and supplementation.
Education:
- PhD in Pharmacology and Physiology, UNSW Sydney (2021)
- BSc (Hons 1), UNSW Sydney (2017)
Dr. Yu's research centers on the role of exercise and supplements in enhancing outcomes for disease models, with particular focus on musculoskeletal conditions. She investigates the potential synergism between exercise and novel supplements for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic disease. Recognizing that osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal diseases cause significant pain, disability, and healthcare costs, her work addresses the critical challenge of low patient adherence to exercise regimens due to discomfort and lack of motivation. Her current research explores novel surgical, pharmacological, and lifestyle interventions to improve patient quality of life.
Scientific Awards:
- Best Oral Presentation Winner, Seoul International Congress on Endocrinology and Metabolism (2024)
- PIncus-Taft Young Investigator Award, Australasian Diabetes Congress (2023)
- Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship (2018)
Dr. Yu is passionate about teaching and supervision, with expertise in exercise, musculoskeletal conditions, and dietary supplements. She supervises SBMS Honours, ILP, and PhD students, and has published 11 journal articles, 1 conference abstract, and 1 preprint. Her research bridges fundamental science with clinical applications, focusing on practical strategies to enhance exercise adherence and effectiveness for patients with chronic conditions.
As part of the Musculoskeletal Health Program team, Dr. Yu collaborates with interdisciplinary researchers to develop evidence-based approaches for managing musculoskeletal conditions, with particular attention to translating research findings into real-world patient care solutions.
