Joseph Y. Halpern is a Professor in the Computer Science Department at Cornell University and holds the Joseph C. Ford Chair of Engineering. His career spans academia and research institutions, including IBM Almaden Research Center and Stanford University.

Halpern's research integrates game theory, decision theory, and distributed computing with a focus on causality and reasoning about knowledge and uncertainty. He has significantly impacted multi-agent systems and security protocols. His theoretical work intersects with Computational Social Science and Incentives and Computation.
His scientific awards include fellowships from the National Academy of Engineering, AAAS, ACM, and IEEE. He received the Kampé de Feriet Award (2016), ACM SIGART Autonomous Agents Research Award (2011), Dijkstra Prize (2009), and the Gödel Prize (1997). He also earned teaching accolades such as the Watts College of Engineering Teaching Award.
Halpern has advised numerous Ph.D. students including Yoram Moses (Technion), Daphne Koller (Insitro), and Matvey Soloviev (KTH, Stockholm). His funding includes support from NSF, ARO, AFOSR, Open Philanthropy Foundation, and the Cooperative AI Foundation. He has served as department chair at Cornell and co-founded the computer science section of arXiv.org.
