Joseph McClernon is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University, and director of the Center for Addiction Science and Technology (CfAST). He serves as Associate Director of the Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), leading strategic initiatives in evaluation, partnership, and policy development. His research focuses on tobacco use, nicotine dependence, and FDA tobacco product regulation, with emphasis on health equity and marginalized populations. McClernon holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Southern Illinois University (2001) and has been continuously NIH/FDA-funded since 2002. He has authored over 170 publications, led the CENIC consortium, and pioneered studies on smoking's interaction with chronic pain and psychiatric conditions.
Key affiliations include Duke Institute for Brain Sciences, Duke Cancer Institute, and the Center for Brain Imaging and Analysis. His work integrates neuroscience, public health, and policy to address addiction through translational research. Recent grants ($2025-$2030) explore neurobehavioral mechanisms of smoking in opioid use disorder patients and disparities in tobacco exposure among pregnant individuals. Awards include the Jarvik-Russell New Investigator Award and Duke's Career Mentoring Award.
McClernon's research spans neuroimaging studies of addiction, regulatory science evaluating nicotine policies, and interventions targeting smoking cessation in high-risk groups. He has mentored early-career researchers across disciplines, fostering academic partnerships between Duke and North Carolina Central University. His lab develops innovative tools like the TRACER activity tracker for translational science evaluation.
