Stephen Baldassarri, MD, MHS, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine (Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine) at Yale School of Medicine. He specializes in critical care medicine, pulmonary diseases, and addiction medicine, with a focus on nicotine and tobacco use disorders. His research explores e-cigarette physiology, vaping effects, and substance use comorbidities. Dr. Baldassarri collaborates with Smilow Cancer Hospital’s Tobacco Treatment Service and leads studies on smoking cessation strategies. He holds a MD from Boston University School of Medicine (2009) and a Master of Health Science (MHS) from Yale (2018).
Research Interests: His work addresses tobacco use disorder, e-cigarette nicotine delivery mechanisms, opioid-related disorders, and sleep deficiency in addiction populations. Key projects include analyzing nicotine flux in vaping, varenicline for e-cigarette cessation, and lung cancer risk mitigation through smoking reduction.
Publications: Over 10 peer-reviewed articles focus on vaping epidemiology, sleep-pain interactions in substance users, and neuroimaging of nicotine receptors. Recent work highlights clinical trials and public health policy implications of emerging tobacco products.
Awards: Notable recognitions include the NIDA K23 Career Development Award (2018), Iva Dostanic Physician-Scientist Award (2018), and participation in the DAHRS research scholars program (2017).
