Joseph Lemelin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Stony Brook University. His research focuses on the philosophical implications of digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, drawing from critical theory, philosophy of mind, and the history of philosophy. He holds a Ph.D. from The New School for Social Research (2018), an M.A. from the same institution (2010), and a B.A. from Boston College (2006).
Before joining Stony Brook, Lemelin held postdoctoral positions at New York University’s Department of Computer Science and Center for Data Science as part of the CILVR research cluster. He also taught courses on the history and philosophy of AI in NYU’s Department of Media, Culture, and Communication. At Stony Brook, he teaches courses spanning the history of philosophy, philosophy of technology, bioethics, and contributes to the university’s new Digital Intelligence Program, which integrates humanities research with computer programming.
Lemelin’s work examines how technology reconfigures core philosophical concepts and has explored topics such as the nature-artifice distinction in Aristotle’s philosophy. His teaching and research emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the societal impacts of emerging technologies.
