Brooke Belisle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art at Stony Brook University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS). Her research focuses on the comparative history and theory of media aesthetics, examining the intersections of photography, cinema, digital media, and scientific visualization. She directs the MA/PhD Art History program and the interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Media, Art, Culture, and Technology.
Belisle holds a PhD in Rhetoric from UC Berkeley, with emphases in Film and New Media, a master’s from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, and a bachelor’s in English from Princeton University. Her work has been supported by prestigious fellowships including the American Council of Learned Societies and the Getty Foundation.
Her research explores how technological and social transformations shape media practices, from 19th-century visual culture to contemporary VR. Key themes include immersive technologies, media archaeology, and the interplay between art and science. She has published widely in journals like Journal of Visual Culture and authored Depth Effects: Dimensionality from Camera to Computation (2024).
