Joseph J. Walsh is a Professor of Classics and History at Loyola University, previously serving as Chair of the Department of Classics. He holds fellowships at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, the American Academy in Rome, and a DAAD Fellowship. His research focuses on classical tradition, Roman conquest of Greece, early Christianity, and 19th-century literature like Charles Dickens. He won the 2007 Excellence in Teaching Award and the Joseph M. Schwartz Memorial Essay Award for his 2003 article. He has directed Loyola's Humanities Symposium, Honors Program, and study abroad program at Katholike Universiteit in Leuven, Belgium.

Research: Explores intersections between classical antiquity and modern thought, including Washington Irving’s use of classical motifs and John Henry Newman’s educational philosophy. His work bridges history, literature, and religious studies.
