Joseph J. Murray is a Professor of Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University's Arts and Humanities School. His work focuses on linguistic human rights, disability rights advocacy, and the legal recognition of sign languages globally. He currently serves as President of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and Secretary General of the International Disability Alliance (IDA). Murray has authored/co-edited influential works including Deaf Gain: Raising the Stakes for Human Diversity (2014) and The Legal Recognition of Sign Languages (2019).
His research emphasizes transnational deaf community connections, inclusive education policy, and sign language rights advocacy. Murray has advised governments worldwide, including Norway's official commission on sign language.
