Joseph Heath is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Cornell Law School, where he assists Professor Michael Sliger in the Federal Indian Law Practicum. With over 50 years of legal practice since the 1971 Attica Prison uprising, his career centers on civil/human rights advocacy and longstanding service as General Counsel for the Onondaga Nation (Central Fire of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy).
His research and practice spans Civil Rights, Human Rights, Criminal Law (including homicide trials), Family Law as a Law Guardian, and Indigenous Rights with focus on sovereignty preservation, rematriation of stolen homelands/cultural patrimony, and environmental protection. Current work emphasizes Federal Indian Law through clinical teaching at Cornell.
His service has been recognized with:
- Two awards for Law Guardian work in Family Court
As an Adjunct Professor, Heath mentors students in the Federal Indian Law Practicum while maintaining active roles as General Counsel for the Onondaga Nation and decades-long membership in Veterans for Peace, integrating practical advocacy with academic instruction.
