Joseph E. LeDoux is the Henry And Lucy Moses Professor of Science, University Professor, and Professor of Neural Science, Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at New York University's Faculty of Arts & Science. He leads groundbreaking research on the neural mechanisms of emotion, memory, and consciousness, with a particular focus on threat processing and fear conditioning. His laboratory has made seminal contributions to understanding how the brain detects and responds to danger, mapping the neural circuits involved in emotional learning and memory.
LeDoux's research interests span memory and emotion, neural circuits of fear, consciousness studies, and the evolutionary history of emotional systems. His work combines animal and human studies using techniques including pharmacological and viral-based manipulations, neuroanatomical tract tracing, neural recordings, and fMRI. His theoretical contributions challenge traditional views of fear and emotion, emphasizing the distinction between conscious feelings and survival mechanisms.
His recent publications reveal an expanding focus from basic fear conditioning to broader questions of consciousness, the gut-brain axis, and the philosophical implications of neuroscience findings. His work shows a clear trajectory from studying specific neural circuits to addressing fundamental questions about the nature of subjective experience across species.
LeDoux's scientific honors include being a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Science, as well as the 2005 Fyssen International Prize in Cognitive Science.
Beyond traditional neuroscience, LeDoux maintains an active presence in public engagement through his band The Amygdaloids, which creates music about the brain and mind, and through numerous public lectures and interviews that translate complex neuroscience concepts for broader audiences. His recent lab closure announcement (August 31, 2023) indicates a transition phase in his research career while maintaining active scholarly contributions.
