Joseph Dunsmoor is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where he leads research in the Department of Psychiatry. His work integrates psychology and neuroscience to study how emotion and cognition interact, focusing on associative learning, episodic memory, and anxiety disorders. He employs neuroimaging (fMRI), psychophysiology, and immersive virtual reality tools to explore these questions.
- Education: B.S. in Psychology from James Madison University (2012), Ph.D. in Psychology & Neuroscience from Duke University (2012), postdoctoral training at New York University (2017).
Dunsmoor's research investigates emotional generalization, the impact of emotional experiences on memory, and mechanisms for regulating fear and anxiety. His lab bridges studies in healthy adults and clinical populations using translational cognitive neuroscience approaches.
- Scientific Awards: R00 Pathway to Independence Award from NIMH.
His lab is funded in part by the National Institute of Mental Health and accepts graduate students through the Department of Psychology. The team employs interdisciplinary methods to address questions about emotional learning and memory, with applications to anxiety disorders.
