Joseph D. Van Riper is a Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at Principia College. He joined the faculty in 2010, specializing in conducting, American popular music, musical theatre, musicianship, and applied trumpet lessons. He directs the College orchestra, choir, jazz ensemble, and chamber ensembles. Van Riper is an active performer on trumpet and piano in traditional jazz ensembles in St. Louis and serves as a substitute organist for the St. Louis Blues.
- Education: DMA in Instrumental and Choral Conducting (George Mason University), MM (Boston University and Illinois State University), BA (Principia College).
His research focuses on turn-of-the-century mechanical music, including his dissertation, The Reproducing Piano: A Portrait of the Artist, which examines the historical impact of reproducing pianos on performance practices. He co-directed a 2016–2017 Principia abroad program in Vienna, Prague, and Paris, emphasizing music studies. Awards include recognition from the U.S. Air Force Band and Army Band, along with academic fellowships.
